This app is good for kids who need help with:

Organization

Arranging and coordinating materials in order to complete a task.

Beyond Diigo’s bookmark storing and organization features, users can download an optional browser toolbar available for Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Google Chrome. Users have the option to install a variety of applications to the toolbar, including sticky notes and quick highlighter. After installing, users can highlight any text on a website, or add small, numbered sticky notes which expand when clicked to allow the addition of notes or text. Diigo remembers users’ annotations between visits, making the service ideal for a research project or other school assignment. Users can use Diigo’s toolbar to get organized in the research and note taking faze of writing a paper, or sticky note interesting points for to prepare for a presentation. Even in leisurely browsing, Diigo’s tools can help users keep track of interesting stories, articles, or other media they find on the internet, making notes for a future visit.

Self-Awareness

Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.

Diigo’s toolbar remembers the notes and highlights of its users for future visits to websites. In combination with Diigo’s bookmark saving and sharing services, the toolbar creates a unique opportunity for users to track their interests or progress in researching a topic over time. Users can make determinations about the development of their interests or knowledge in a subject area by revisiting bookmarked sites and browsing and editing previous notes and highlights they’ve made. Users may also choose to save and share their bookmarks and notes with friends, adding an outside perspective to their work. Saving tangible and accessible evidence of development and progress in a subject area or interest can be instrumental in exercising the Self-Awareness thinking skill.

Reading

Browsing interesting web content is an excellent way for users to practice reading. Using Diigo’s additional features, like sticky notes and highlighting, can also help users make notes of passages that are confusing, or words that they don’t understand. Users can make notes to return to a specific paragraph later, or highlight words they’d like to remember or look up in an online dictionary.

To get started with Diigo, try some of the suggested ideas and strategies listed below, or tell us about your own in the comment field on the bottom of the page

Organization Activity

Have your child use Diigo to do research for a school paper. While finding Internet sources, have her place a sticky note with a description of how she plans to incorporate each source into the paper. As she goes through the sources, have highlight key points and make notes about how each connects to the overall topic. Ask her to keep the sources organized on one list and tag them appropriately in case she needs to find them again quickly for later use.

Self-Awareness Activity

Have your child visit her favorite websites and begin adding them to her list of bookmarks. Have her think about which topics interest her most, and then find other sources that contain information relating to these topics. Then, ask her to separate each topic and mark her favorites via a tagging system. As the list grows, she'll have a handy way of quickly finding the information most relevant to her tastes, both through use of the tagging feature and by sorting the websites into different categories using the “My Lists” feature.

Reading Activity

Have your child read over, highlight, and add sticky notes to a long article or web page on a topic that interests him, like video games or sports. Ask them to highlight words or sentences that are confusing, interesting, or important. Later, ask your child to look up a few of the highlighted words and place a sticky note next to the highlighted word with its definition included. Alternatively, ask your child to place sticky notes next to sections that were especially interesting explaining why they enjoyed that part of the text.

Diigo & ADHD

diigo-evolutionChildren with ADHD who are in school struggle to organize information when preparing for longer assignments. Children can sometimes get lost in the way that information is presented on web pages. Text heavy documents are not only daunting, but nearly impossible to sift through. Diigo's mission to "annotate, archive, and organize" information found on the web, is perfectly suited for children with ADHD. Referred to as a "social bookmarking website," Diigo allows children to organize favorite sites with bookmarks and tags. Children also have the ability to highlight text within a webpage, and attach sticky notes. Diigo can be extremely useful for writing research papers that require multiple sources, as it helps to synthesize and organize large amounts of content.

How to Use Diigo for Children with ADHD

  • While nearly all web browsers have the capacity to bookmark or "favorite" websites, Diigo offers more in terms of functionality. Children with ADHD who bookmark sites, may be unable to locate them later, as their bookmark lists continue to grow. Even if a bookmarked website is located, children may have had to spend more time than necessary searching for the link. Diigo has a search function, where children can enter keywords to locate bookmarked web pages immediately - a feature that can be very beneficial for children with ADHD, as it keeps them from wasting time.
  • Writing research papers can be a burden for children with ADHD. Consolidating a wealth of online research into an organized paper can be a difficult task - especially when children must read through lengthy academic articles, or longer encyclopedia entries. Diigo helps to make the researching process easier, with a "highlighting," and "sticky note" tool. Children can highlight relevant information that will be useful for their papers, then, in an adjoining note, respond to the argument that the entry makes, helping them to stray from plagiarism.
  • Diigo is also helpful for exercising Self-Awareness skills. The service is highly social, as all bookmarks, notes, and highlights can be shared with other Diigo users. Diigo can help facilitate group projects, as children can send notes and highlights to mark their research.
