Tally is a habit tracking app that uses a simple interface for the user to keep track of any kind of activity over days, weeks, months, or years. When the user opens the app, they click on the plus icon at the bottom of the screen to add a new habit. If the user is not sure what type of habit they would like to start with, Tally has suggestions based on different categories such as health, productivity, and personal growth. They will have a series of options for customizing their habits, including how often they wish to track it, what method of counting they want to use, and what color code they want to assign to this task.

The habit then shows up as a color-coded square on the main page. To record a successful completion of a habit, the user simply needs to tap on the square the number of times they performed the task and the corresponding number will show up on the square.

Holding down on the square will pull up a quick view of the statistics for that particular habit. Clicking on the graph icon in the lower right corner will bring up the statistics for all the user’s habits over the week, month, or year.

Tally is free to use but certain features require in-app purchases. It is available now on iOS.

Tally helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Focus: Sustaining energy for short-term and long-term tasks.

Deciding on a new habit and sticking with it requires focus. The user needs to be able to see how this new habit will fit into their daily routine and how they will continue to keep up with it over a longer period of time. Apps like Tally can help with this process by allowing the user to visualize their journey and to see the progress they have made over a period of time. For users who struggle with focus, choosing one habit at a time over adding several to the app can help develop the appropriate patterns that are required for success.

Self-Control: Managing our actions, feelings and behaviors.

Habit tracking apps are a great way to work on self-control. Habits can be difficult to maintain if the user is not tracking them in some way. Tally allows the user to easily create habits and simply track them by clicking on the corresponding square. They can then check their statistics over time to reflect on the progress they have made. It can also allow the user to see what areas need improvement and what habits are now fully established and no longer need to be tracked. For users who struggle with managing their actions, starting slow with a small habit and making sure to open the app every day to track their progress will help to build up this skill.
