Daylio is a habit tracker and diary app where the user selects emojis and icons instead of worded entries in order to keep track of their daily activities. When the user first opens the app they are asked what types of activities they would like to track. These options range from eating habits to social activities to chores. They can then customize the color palate of their emojis to fit their personal tastes. Reminders to complete daily entries can also be set up at this time which can help the user consistently make entries into the app.
The users will then create goals that they work towards based on the items they wanted to track. The app will begin by asking the user how they are feeling. They select the emoji that best describes how they feel at the moment. It then asks the user what activities they have engaged in by having them click on icons representing these actions within the categories they want to track. If the user does not see the activity they want they can add it manually by typing in the title and selecting an emoji to match. Notes and photos can also be added if more clarification is needed or the user wants to remember a particular moment from that day.
After a few days of tracking, the user can then look at analytics to see how they are progressing with their goals and even track their moods and habits over a period of time.
Daylio requires a subscription but offers a limited free trial. Younger users may need adult assistance setting up their account.
Self-Awareness: Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.
For users who have a hard time expressing their emotions or working through why they feel a certain way, diary apps can be a great way to practice giving voice to feelings. Daylio is helpful because it takes this one step further and adds icons that the user can select rather than trying to express their thoughts and feelings in words. For users who struggle with writing or are too young to express themselves in this manner, the emoji option that Daylio offers can be a useful tool to improving self-awareness in a low-stakes manner. For users who want to work on specific goals, diary apps can also help with self-awareness, letting them look for patterns in the types of behaviors they want to improve or stop.
Self-Control: Managing our actions, feelings and behaviors.
Goal-setting apps are a good way for users to encourage or curb certain behaviors or actions. For users who struggle with self-control, having a system of accountability can help them stay focused and not lose their patience when trying to adapt to a new approach to their daily lives. For example, if the user is told they need to improve their reading skills, they can set a goal for this on the Daily app. They can then set reminders, track their progress, and even write notes on how completing the goal made them feel. The app does not have a response component, meaning that the user needs to practice their own self-motivation and self-control to complete the goals they are setting for themselves.
