Mindpal is a brain-training app that customizes your learning goals with fun games and status reports. When initially opening the app, the user specifies what areas of brain training they want to work on. This ranges from improving reading speed to blocking out distractions while working. After the initial goals have been established, the user plays through a series of short games that are designed to strengthen the areas of the brain that the user specifically wanted to improve. For example, the game Word Tower builds reading speed by building words in blocks on top of one another, forcing the user to read them quickly in an attempt to retain information. They then have to answer comprehension questions to ensure that not only did they read the text quickly but comprehended what they were reading as well. After each game is completed, the user can see how they compared with other players in their age group.

At the end of each workout session, the user can then look at their Stats page to see how they are performing in each area that they initially selected. The idea of the app is that the user comes back each day to play different games that continue to work on these areas, building these skills up over time.

Mindpal has a free seven day trial but requires a purchase after this initial period is over. It is available now on iOS and Android.

Mindpal helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Focus: Ignoring distractions.

Many of the games in Mindpal are designed to help you build up your focusing skills in the midst of various distractions. For users who struggle with focusing, selecting this skill as an area of improvement will help the app choose these types of games for you to practice with daily. For example, the game Match Pairs presents a grid of letters and numbers where the user is trying to find matching pairs among them. As the user progresses, the grid gets bigger and the number of matches increases, leading to more distractions that need to be blocked out. The game builds in intensity, meaning that if the user is really struggling with focus, they get to start out with a smaller task and build up to more complicated focusing demands.

Working Memory: Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.

Several games within the Mindpal app are specifically designed to assist with building Working Memory. One example is the game Sky Stars, where the player looks at a list of stars and then performs several unrelated actions before being asked to recall what stars were listed earlier. Games like this can help people who struggle with working memory because it allows them to practice for a short amount of time each day, building up their confidence and capacity for this skill.
