Vocabulary Builder by Magoosh is a word flashcard app that helps users prepare for specific tests featuring vocabulary. The user opens the app and is given the option of studying words for tests such as the SAT, the GRE, and the TOEFL. After clicking on the desired test, the user can choose to study words that increase in difficulty as you go along. These categories are broken down further into levels that need to be mastered before moving on to the next.

In each level, a vocabulary word will appear along with options for a definition. The user will click on what they believe to be the definition of the word. If they are correct, the word will appear less frequently in reviewing. If they are incorrect, an explanation will appear with the correct answer and a sample sentence that the user can read to see the word in context.

The app also features a competition mode where you have a limited amount of time to get the definition of a set amount of words correct. You then compete against another user to see who can get the most words correct.

Vocabulary Builder is a free app and the user can create an account in order to save their progress. While the app is appropriate for all ages, it is best geared to those who are studying for the specific tests listed at the beginning when opening the application.

Vocabulary Builder by Magoosh  helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Focus: Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

Because the words being studied appear multiple times in a level, the user needs to focus and pay attention to the answers they are getting wrong and what the correct definition of the word is. The more often they get the word wrong, the more often it will appear, lengthening the time it takes to complete the round. For users who struggle with focus, vocabulary flashcard apps such as Vocabulary Builder can be a great way to focus on smaller details for a short sustained period of time.

Working Memory: Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.

Users will need to access their working memory to recall the definition of a word as they see it appear on the screen. For users who struggle with working memory, they may find themselves repeating words several times over because they are not able to recall the definition and find it amongst the other options. For these users, flashcard apps are a good way to practice using working memory because the words in each level are finite and repeated several times, allowing the user to build up their confidence and recall the definitions more easily.
