Ninja Focus is a mindfulness app that is specifically designed for children to practice their self-awareness and self-control skills. The app features various challenges that kids can complete to win trophies, featuring such activities as meditation, dancing, and positive self-talk. There are also stories that kids can listen to at night to help them relax and prepare for sleep.

Ninja Focus also has positive self-talk for children that is specifically geared towards feelings of anxiety and sadness regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Other activities are geared towards self-control skills, helping kids calm their minds, practice yoga, and use music as a focusing tool.

When kids open the app, they can also keep track of their mood on a daily basis. When they select how they are feeling, the Ninja Focus app pulls up content for them specifically designed to target their current emotions. Kids can then create playlists of their favorite music, meditations, and activities to use whenever they feel this particular emotion again.

Ninja Focus is a subscription-based app but a free seven day trial is available. The app is currently available on Android and iOS.

Ninja Focus helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Self Awareness: Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.

It can often be hard for children to express their own feelings, let alone justify their thoughts and actions. Mindfulness apps, particularly those geared towards children, can be a great tool for kids to learn to acknowledge how they are feeling and what they can do about these emotions. For children who struggle with self-awareness, starting each day with an emotional “check in” on the app is a good place to start. Ninja Focus will then select a few activities to target this emotion and guide the user by helping them address the feelings and provide positive activities and self-talk for them to practice.

Self-Control: Managing our actions, feelings and behaviors.

As soon as the user becomes better at self-awareness, the next step is self-control. Once we are able to articulate our emotions, we need to learn to be able to manage them effectively in our day-to-day lives. Ninja Focus has activities specifically designed for children who are anxious, stressed, or angry. There are activities featuring positive self-talk and affirmations that can help with children who are not feeling confident with themselves. There are also physical activities such as yoga and dancing to use kinesthetic movement to address control issues. For children who struggle with self-control, starting out slow with one or two activities a day will be a good way to introduce these concepts in a manageable way. Also, because the app is “gamified,” children will earn points and trophies for completing these objectives, making this process fun as well.
