Delicious is a social bookmarking tool that allows users to save and organize websites. Users can share their bookmarks with friends, as well as view and follow friends’ lists. This service is a great way for your child to keep track of favorite websites for school projects, papers, or for leisure browsing. Once an account is created, users can follow other members, leave comments and share or recommend links. Delicious is easy to navigate and use, but parents with younger children should be mindful of what websites they visit and share. The service is suitable for children aged 10 and over, but as with any web-based service, parents are encouraged to monitor children’s online activity and interactions.

Delicious can help improve Organization, Self-Awareness, Flexibility, and Reading.

Organization

Arranging and coordinating materials in order to complete a task.

Delicious helps users compile information and categorize it to keep track of specific topics, follow certain authors or stay up to date with the websites they frequently visit. As users create and add to their lists, it is important for them to arrange this information in an easily digestible manner. This can be done by using tagging and other features that keep links organized and retrievable.

Self-Awareness

Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.

A Delicious account helps users catalogue and track topics special to them, and can serve as a visual interface that represents their unique interests. Users can follow and interact other members, too, allowing them to share topics, recommend links and leave comments. These light social aspects make the app a great way for users to become comfortable sharing interests with others and discussing topics within a group of like-minded individuals.

Flexibility

Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations. Trying new things.

There are a wide array of information to discover through Delicious, and the app's organized presentation makes it easy to dive into various facets of a topic. Readers can use the service to stay updated and delve deeper into a specific topic, but Delicious also makes it easy for them to begin to branch out into other topics and develop new interests. This can be done by users browsing content on their own, or by reading lists and recommendations compiled by others.

Reading

While some of links compile via the service may take users to images or videos, many of them will be links to text-based articles. Whatever topics users are interested in, there are people online writing about it. Exploring new websites will provide an opportunity to practice reading in an engaging way, as users can pick and choose content to find reading material tailored to their tastes. This can help keep them engaged and make practicing reading feel more like a leisure activity than a chore.

Delicious is an excellent tool for practicing Self-Awareness, Flexibility and Organization and Reading. Try some of the ideas below, or submit your own in the comment field at the bottom of the page.

Self-Awareness Activity

Have your child brainstorm a list of topics that interest her. You can make suggestions based on what you know about your child or suggest things that you both might be interested in learning more about. Once you have a list of at least 10 items, have your child search for Delicious pages dedicated to those topics where he can find lists of links to explore. Make sure to ask him what he found, what was most interesting, and why these topics fascinate him so much.

Flexibility Activity

Challenge your child to learn something new. Create a list of 5 topics you think your child knows nothing about, like space travel or a foreign village. Have her pick at least one which she'd like to learn more about, then she can do so by searching for links and reading simple articles. The goal is to teach your child to explore unfamiliar topics with an open mind.

Organization Activity

Have your child organize his links by giving them tags that will make searching for them easier. He could also create folders based on the topic of the links that he is saving. As he searches, your child should tag and sort each link that he saves. Practice together for the first few searches, and you can discuss out loud why each tag is helpful and why each link belongs in a certain folder.

Reading Activity

Send your child links to articles that are slightly above his reading level. If he gets stuck, read the articles together and try to have him summarize the content in his own words. Do this over the course of a few weeks, and make sure to discuss the topics afterwards to gauge his interest and ensure the reading was completed.
