Vocabology is a fun and engaging mobile app for improving vocabulary. The app offers a word of the day feature, vocabulary exploration options, and a wide range of languages to choose from. The word of the day function draws words from various sourcelike Merriam Webster Dictionary, Wordsmith, The Free Dictionary, Dictionary.com, and Urban Dictionary. These words then become part of an ongoing quiz that prompts users to recall previously learned vocab. Although some words may be challenging, the app is fun and informative, and can make learning new vocabulary a welcomed challenge for everyday students and alternative learners alike. Due to the reading requirements and complexity of some of the generated words, the app is recommended for ages 8 and up.

Working Memory

Vocabology encourages users to remember what they've learned with its quiz feature. In order to get a good score, users will have to recall previously learned words from context clues. Users should take the quiz each day in order to optimize their ability to acquire and retain new vocabulary. Users can also test their Working Memory by spacing out quizzes. They should note the differences in their learning when taking a daily quiz compared to one every 3 or 4 days. Merely remembering the definition of a word only achieves a base understanding of its use, as students also need to recall context in order to implement their newly expanded correctly while writing.

Self-Awareness

Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.

Vocabology allows users to judge how the limits of their vocabulary and how well they are learning and retaining information via the app. Users that struggle to remember recently learned words should increase the frequency in which they take the quizzes to remedy the situation. For some users, that might mean quizzing themselves 2-3 times per day. It is important for users to understand their own abilities and limitations, so they can set up the app to cater to their particular learning needs. Finding the best method of reinforcement makes users to think about how they learn. Often times, new words can become part of daily vocabulary through visual association, or matching a word to a certain image. Users must determine the best way of committing Vocabology's new words into memory. Whether it is through visual association or extra quizzes, users must monitor their progression to ensure they are responding well to the app and getting the most they can out of the experience.

The only way to develop a more refined vocabulary is through an increased exposure to new words. Exposure to new words aids in reading comprehension, and can even help with reading fluency to increase the speed at which text is comprehended. Through dedicated use of the app over time, users will find that they are engaging better with texts, as well as becoming stronger readers who can determine meaning from context clues and previously learned words. As vocabulary grows, discerning context from related words and sentences structure becomes all the easier.
