Sesame Street Family Play is an app designed to provide activities for children when they need to stay close to home. The app is designed for parents to use as a way to keep their children entertained, active, and calm using different interactive games.
When the user opens the app, they are given three choices for types of play: Keeping Busy, Moving Your Body, and Calming Down. The parent selects which type of activity they would like their children to do by clicking on the appropriate icon. The app then asks what room of the house they would like to do the activity in. There is also an option for video chat, for families who want to play together but are distanced. After selecting the location, the parent selects the number of children playing, from one child and up. A Sesame Street character then appears with a game suggestion. The premise of the game is explained and if it sounds fun for the group, they simply click Play This Game. If not, they can click the Show Me Another Game button and another character will appear with a different game.
If the user clicks on the Play This Game button, they will be given a set of rules and an explanation for how to play the game. After the game is done, they can either return to the home screen, play the game again, or play a different game within the same category.
Sesame Street Family Play is available for free on iOS and Android.
Flexibility: Trying something new.
Sesame Street Family Play allows your child to engage in a variety of activities, no matter what room of the house, or what kind of mood they are in. This allows children, even very young ones, to practice their flexibility skills by trying something new. Parents can encourage this by using the app to switch up locations or types of games their children play while using the app. For children who struggle with trying new things, integrate one new activity a day and discuss how they felt about the activity. Even if they hated it, keep introducing at least one new activity a day.
Self-Control: Managing our actions, feelings and behaviors.
Choosing appropriate activities based on moods is a good way for young children to practice self-control skills and learn to manage their behavior. Talking with your child about how they are feeling and appropriate actions to take when they are feeling this way can be helped with the Sesame Street Family Play app. If the child is upset, anxious, or frustrated, choosing one of the Calm Down activities is a way to have them manage those emotions in a productive way. If the child is acting out and saying they have nothing to do, the Active games can be a way for them to engage in productive play by themselves or with other children.
