New Horizons: Kids Meditation is an app specifically designed for children to guide them through meditation and mindfulness activities. When the child opens the app, they will be able to choose between three options: Guided Meditation, Stories, and Sleep.

Guided Meditation sessions take children through exercises like Body Scan, Mindfulness Breathing, and positive visualizations. In Stories mode, children are able to listen to several different calming stories, read with ambient music playing in the background. And Sleep takes children through more calming stories designed for nighttime accompanied by gentle music.

Children can also take their favorite stories, meditation exercises, and sleep stories and create a playlist of their own to go back to whenever they want.

New Horizons: Kids Meditation is a free-to-download app but to unlock all of the services, in-app purchases are required.

New Horizons: Kids Meditation helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Focus: Ignoring Distractions

Meditation and Mindfulness apps are a great way to help kids practice their focus skills and block out distractions. By focusing on their breathing or the voice in the guided meditation, kids can see the benefit of being able to ignore the other noises around them and regulate their emotions. For children who struggle with staying focused, try listening to a shorter breathing session. After they are familiar with this shorter exercise, they can move up to the longer meditation sessions. Children can also practice focus by listening to the relaxing story mode while they are going to sleep.

Self Awareness:  Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.

For children who have a hard time expressing their emotions or cannot explain why they do certain things, a guided meditation app can be a way for them to center themselves and process those feelings in a more positive way. For children who are dealing with grief or sadness, these apps can also help guide them through positivity exercises that can help them process their emotions rather than keeping them inside. Start off slow, giving the child the opportunity to listen to one or two short sessions and then debriefing afterwards. The child can then work their way up to longer sessions on their own without prompting.
