Day One is an app for students who want to journal in a modern way. Students can create daily entries by typing or using their phone’s voice recognition software for a speech-to-text option. They can also add pictures to their entry. Students simply click on the “New” option at the bottom of the screen and then start to journal. This app is a great option for students who are new to journaling because it is easy and fun to use. Daily reminders can also be set up for students who might need a helpful reminder to journal daily.
Journaling with photos is free using Day One but subscribers to the app’s service can also add video and audio clips to their journal entries. Because the app is used for journaling, students who cannot write must use the speech recognition function or receive help from a parent.
Self-Awareness: Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.
Journaling is one of the best ways for students to put their feelings into tangible form. If students keep a daily journal, they can look back on their writing and reflect on how their emotions affected them on a particular day. This can lead to greater self-control and understanding. Adding a photo or picture component allows them to express visually and artistically how they were feeling on any particular day as well.
Focus: Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.
Writing about oneself is often easier than writing about other topics. For students struggling with focus, creating and maintaining a daily journal is a way of practicing focus in a low stakes and personal way.
