Social-Emotional Skill Development: Self-Care

Social-Emotional Skills - Self-care

Students will develop their social-emotional abilities by participating in an online curriculum with a group of peers. They will apply these skills using digital games and applications while relating to activities in school, at home and other extracurricular activities.

Overview

In this session, our Executive Technology Coaches (EF Coaches) will be focused on the topic of self-care, an important building block for social-emotional skill awareness.

We will begin with a little help from our friend, Kid President!

In the Whiteboard Activity of the day, EF Coaches and Explorers will complete a self-care checklist and create an individualized self-care plan! As adults, we also encourage you to check out the “Self-care for Families” checklist we use for this activity.

Games and Apps Used in this Workshop

Clumsy Ninja is an interactive character-care game that requires players to train and care for Clumsy Ninja. The more skilled Clumsy Ninja becomes, the closer he gets to finding his friend, Kira. As a group, we will showcase Clumsy Ninja to learn about the basic features of the game. All of our Learning Works For Kids Explorers will be able to hop into their own Clumsy Ninja game to individually explore for about ten minutes with the EF Coaches checking in to answer any questions or provide help if it is needed.

Workshop Activities

The LW4K method to using video games as teaching tools relies on strategic teaching principles and our approach of “Detect, Reflect, and Connect.” The purpose of the Detect, Reflect, and Connect steps is to mold the child into an active learner who becomes aware of, engaged in, and contemplative of what she is learning. These steps can enhance motivation and concentration. They also assist in extending learning beyond a particular game or technology and connecting it to the real world.

  • Detect

Detect or identify when and where they are using thinking skills in video game play.

In Clumsy Ninja, Explorers train a ninja to improve his skills, and quickly learn he is not perfect and needs a little help from his friends!

  • Reflect

Reflect or consider how the thinking skills used during gameplay helps them to achieve their goals.

Explorers will be posed with questions, such as: What did you learn today during the activity? How can you translate your skills in the game to other areas of your life, such as school, home, and extracurricular activities?

  • Connect

Connect or apply game-based thinking skills to real-world activities.

As a follow-up to today’s session, Explorers will be asked to play one of two character-care games: Pou or Egg! Information for both apps is found in today’s follow-up activities. Parents are encouraged to have discussions with their children about their experiences caring for themselves and their characters in the game!
