Too Much Minecraft – What can Parents do about Screen Time Concerns

Many parents of kids with ADHD have observed their kids becoming overly involved with their screen time. And often, they report that their kids want to play too much Minecraft. Dr. Kulman conducted a workshop for parents where he gave them advice about how to make the most of Minecraft, but also how to set limits when necessary. Many of the questions at the conclusion of the workshop were focused on questions of whether kids could be addicted to screen time. Educators who attended the workshop expressed an interest in how Minecraft could be leveraged into a learning experience.

Here is a brief description of the 90 minute presentation

The widely popular video game Minecraft offers many opportunities for learning and just as many needs for limit setting. This presentation will help adults to understand the fascination for Minecraft and other video games for kids with ADHD.  We will examine recent research about the amount of time children with ADHD play video games, how well they perform on games and apps, and how effectively they learn from digital media. Clinical observations from hundreds of interviews with the parents of kids with ADHD will inform practical recommendations on topics such as the amount of time kids should play video games, difficulty transitioning from video games, irritability after playing games, social isolation, and a disinterest in other forms of play.
