Hey everyone, welcome to Learningworks for Kids Game Spotlights! This is a new series where we will be walking through some of your favorite games and talking about how playing them can help you get better at real-world skills! If you want to know more about how to take your gameplay to the next level, visit learningworksforkids.com and learn more about how video games can be a part of a balanced play diet.

Today we are going to be talking about Shining Nikki, the game that dares to be a dress up game, RPG, and visual novel all wrapped into one! This game is the latest in the Nikki series of games and features, for the first time, 3D animation in addition to its fully voiced 2D dialogue scenes. In the game, you play as yourself; you are brought to an unfamiliar world by Nikki herself who says she needs your help to save the world of Miraland from destruction. As you progress through the game, you meet new people and participate in style battles in order to earn coins, new outfits, and the ability to move on to the next part of the story.

The battles in Shining Nikki require the player to use their flexibility skills. There are five different types of styles in the game and each battle requires a specific type of style in order to gain a top score. For example, in one battle you may need to create an elegant evening ensemble while the next battle might have you preparing a casual outfit for lounging around at home. The player needs to look at what the battle requires and compare it against what they have in their clothing and accessory inventory in order to put together the perfect outfit. If the player just puts random clothing together or does not pay attention to the requirements of the style competition, they will fail and need to try again.

The player also needs to use their planning skills because coins and gems are a finite resource in the game. Outfits occasionally need to be purchased, customized, or upgraded in order to successfully compete and this all requires the use of the in-game currency. The player also needs to increase their bond by hanging out with Nikki and bringing her presents or having experiences with her like going to the movies. The player needs to look at how much money they have and what they need to build up a good rounded out wardrobe for competitions instead of randomly spending their money on items.

And finally, the player needs to use their focusing skills in Shining Nikki. Because it is a visual novel, the player must pay attention to the large amounts of text on the screen as they are listening to the voice actors reading the lines. Without focusing, the player might miss something important they need to know about preparing for a battle or understanding what is happening in the story.
