Social-Emotional Skill Development: Self-Awareness

Social-Emotional Skill Development: Self-Awareness

Students will develop their social-emotional abilities by participating in an online curriculum with a group of peers. They will apply these skills using digital games and applications while relating to activities in school, at home and other extracurricular activities.

In this session, our Executive Functioning Technology Coaches (EF Coaches) will be guiding us through the thinking skill of Self-Awareness. What is self-awareness? How can this skill increase our success at home, in school, and with other peers?

Cover Orange 2: Journey is an adventure game that requires players to protect their oranges from the evil acid rain! Players must determine the best way to protect all of the oranges in the level using the available objects in a limited amount of time. After showcasing the basic features of the game, our LW4K Explorers will be able individually explore their own Cover Orange 2: Journey game for ten minutes with the EF Coaches checking in to answer any questions or to provide help if needed.

Whiteboard Activity: Emotions in Our Bodies

In the Whiteboard Activity, EF Coaches and Explorers will discover how being self-aware of the feelings in our body (somatic symptoms) can help us be aware of the feelings in our mind. We will use the attached resource “Emotions in Our Bodies Activity” to guide our discussion.

In-session App: Youper

Youper is an artificial intelligence application designed to help users track their detect and monitor their mood over time. After an introduction to the app, we will explore how our students can check in with themselves on a daily basis using the features of Youper. This app can track mood information, concerns your child has been having, and much more!

Workshop Activities

The LW4K method to using video games as teaching tools relies on strategic teaching principles and our approach of “Detect, Reflect, and Connect.” The purpose of the Detect, Reflect, and Connect steps is to mold the child into an active learner who becomes aware of, engaged in, and contemplative of what she is learning. These steps can enhance motivation and concentration. They also assist in extending learning beyond a particular game or technology and connecting it to the real world.

  • Detect

Detect or identify when and where they are using thinking skills in video game play.

EF Coaches will challenge Explorers to determine when they are using self-awareness to protect their oranges from the evil acid rain in Cover Orange 2: Journey. Additionally, EF Coaches will discuss how being self-aware of our emotions and what those emotions look like to others is a useful tool!

  • Reflect

Reflect or consider how the thinking skills used during gameplay helps them to achieve their goals.

Explorers will be presented with the following question: How do skills you practiced in Cover Orange 2: Journey relate to concept of self-awareness? Why is self-awareness an important skill for success in the game?

  • Connect

Connect or apply game-based thinking skills to real-world activities.

As a follow-up to this’s session, Explorers will be asked to explore the app Youper to become more familiar with it’s features. Check out our Follow-Up activity below!

Follow-Up Activities

Practice self-awareness skills with Youper.

As a follow-up activity for this session, complete daily check-ins with the app Youper and explore its additional features!

We strongly encourage children to do this at least 3 times over the course of the next week they have data to to monitor and reflect back on. Depending on the age of your child, you may want to assist them in this process.
