Social-Emotional Skill Development: Self-Awareness
Students will develop their social-emotional abilities by participating in an online curriculum with a group of peers. They will apply these skills using digital games and applications while relating to activities in school, at home and other extracurricular activities.
Overview
In this session, our Executive Functioning Technology Coaches (EF Coaches) will be guiding us through the thinking skill of Self-Awareness. What is self-awareness? How can this skill increase our success at home, in school, and with other peers?

After showcasing the basic features of the game, our LW4K Explorers will be able individually explore their own Cover Orange 2: Journey game for ten minutes with the EF Coaches checking in to answer any questions or to provide help if needed.
Whiteboard Activity: Emotions in Our Bodies
In the Whiteboard Activity, EF Coaches and Explorers will discover how being self-aware of the feelings in our body (somatic symptoms) can help us be aware of the feelings in our mind. We will use the attached resource “Emotions in Our Bodies Activity” to guide our discussion.

Workshop Activities
The LW4K method to using video games as teaching tools relies on strategic teaching principles and our approach of “Detect, Reflect, and Connect.” The purpose of the Detect, Reflect, and Connect steps is to mold the child into an active learner who becomes aware of, engaged in, and contemplative of what she is learning. These steps can enhance motivation and concentration. They also assist in extending learning beyond a particular game or technology and connecting it to the real world.
EF Coaches will challenge Explorers to determine when they are using self-awareness to protect their oranges from the evil acid rain in Cover Orange 2: Journey. Additionally, EF Coaches will discuss how being self-aware of our emotions and what those emotions look like to others is a useful tool![/info_list_item][info_list_item list_title=”Reflect” list_icon=”Defaults-wechat weixin”]Reflect or consider how the thinking skills used during gameplay helps them to achieve their goals.
Explorers will be presented with the following question: How do skills you practiced in Cover Orange 2: Journey relate to concept of self-awareness? Why is self-awareness an important skill for success in the game?[/info_list_item][info_list_item list_title=”Connect” list_icon=”Defaults-refresh”]Connect or apply game-based thinking skills to real-world activities.
As a follow-up to this’s session, Explorers will be asked to explore the app Youper to become more familiar with it’s features. Check out our Follow-Up activity below![/info_list_item][/info_list]
