Dual N Back is a brain-training app where students are asked to perform two ever-changing tasks simultaneously.
A board appears on the screen where a square randomly flashes. While the square flashes, a letter of the alphabet will be spoken. Students must buzz in when the squares flash in the same location or the same letter of the alphabet is repeated. If they get a sufficient number correct, the game will begin again with a more complicated set of rules.
For best results, students should play 20 rounds of the game daily. Because of the increasing complexity of the tasks this app may not be suitable for children under the age of eight.
Working Memory: Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.
While playing this game, students need to remember where the previous square flashed and what was the last letter of the alphabet they heard. To be successful in the game they need to keep this information in their head until the next set of letters and squares are presented. If they do not, they will miss the opportunity to buzz in and lose points for that round.
Flexibility: Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations.
The position of squares and the letters of the alphabet are constantly changing, requiring students to use their flexibility skills and be willing to accept that the game is constantly changing. As the levels get harder, students have greater opportunities to practice flexibility.
