Hey everyone, welcome to Learningworks for Kids Game Spotlights! This is a new series where we will be walking through some of your favorite games and talking about how playing them can help you get better at real-world skills! If you want to know more about how to take your gameplay to the next level, visit learningworksforkids.com and learn more about how video games can be a part of a balanced play diet.

Today we are going to be talking about the platforming adventure game A Hat in Time. This game focuses on a character simply known as Hat Girl. After her spaceship loses all of its fuel (called timepieces), she must go down to the planet’s surface and gather them up again. Hat Girl must explore the world around her by running, jumping, and crafting new hats which come with special abilities.

The player will need to use their flexibility skills because 3D platformers can require the player to approach obstacles from different directions or angles. Flexibility can also come in handy when switching between hats. Because the hats in the game have different abilities, choosing the best one for the situation requires adaptation and a willingness to try new things.

Players will also need their time management skills, particularly when they are in the platforming areas of the game. Timing jumps and sneaking around in stealth mode both require the player to know when to stand still, when to jump, and when to make a run for it!

And finally, planning is a good way for players to determine what badges they want to purchase. Hat Girl can collect bubbles that can in turn be used to purchase additional badges which feature upgrades like automatic pickup for items.
