WipEout HD is a fast-paced racing game set in the distant future. The player races against seven other racers in a futuristic car capable of traveling over 500 miles per hour. During the race, the player can acquire items that either boost his own performance or hinder the other racers. These items range from missiles to a shield that protects the player from harm. If the player receives too much damage, his vehicle will be destroyed and he will lose the race. There is mild fantasy violence in the form of wipeouts and crashes, but no blood or otherwise offensive content. Once the player has a feel for how the vehicle operates, the game is relatively easy to learn. Due to these considerations, WipEout HD is recommended to players 9 and up.

This Game is Good for Kids Who Need Help With:

Self-Control

Managing feelings, actions and behaviors.

WipEout HD is a very fast-paced game and one mistake could send the player from first place to last place. On the other hand, one clever move could send the player to the front of the pack. For this reason, it is essential that the player does not get hung up on every mistake he makes. The player needs to be able to quickly bounce back from setbacks without letting his emotions get the better of him. If the player is hit with a weapon and loses his standing in the race, he needs to quickly collect himself and get right back into the race. Furthermore, controlling the urge to race at the highest speed can help the player better navigate difficult turns and avoid crashes.

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks

WipEout HD is very fast-paced, requiring quick reflexes and precise control of the vehicle. The player has many factors to consider while racing, like his speed, his standing in the race, upcoming turns, and the item he currently has. Winding through tight turns and dodging other racers and their attacks takes a good amount of precision to accomplish, and if the player does not remain intently focused on the action, he could easily slip up. Maintaining attention throughout the race is imperative, as simply hitting the brake too late can cause a miscalculated turn or, even worse, a crash. Additionally, the player may have to repeat some of the more difficult races several times to master them. Sustaining effort until such a task is complete takes devotion and persistence, which are crucial aspects of the Focus thinking skill.

Working Memory

Recalling and retaining information in mind while working.

In order to master a track, the player needs to memorize all of its characteristics, recalling this information mid-race to gain an edge over other racers. Knowing when a sharp turn is coming up can help the player know when to slow down for more control, while recalling the location of a lengthy straight-away allows the player to safely burst ahead with speed. If the player fails to quickly recall the various aspects of a track mid-race, he will fail to anticipate the twists and turns that quickly rise, likely falling far behind other racers.
