Khan Academy is a free database of educational videos that contains guiding imagery, notes, and lectures on a wide range of academic topics. It is particularly useful for explaining both simple and complex math and scientific concepts – and their selection is always growing. Khan Academy also features a “Practice” tab where users can log in, and progress through a map of knowledge categories, improving their skills as they go. This service is offered online at the Khan Academy website, and is also available in an app version for iOS devices. Khan Academy allows users to search by keywords, encourages children to explore their curiosity in an educational way, and is powerful tool for homework. Khan Academy can apply to every age group, as there are tests that range from telling time, to advanced algebra.

This app is good for kids who need help with:

Self-Awareness

Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.

Khan Academy allows your child to take learning into his own hands. By using Khan Academy, he will be able to explore topics that interest him simply by searching for keywords or looking at the featured videos. He may discover a passion for science that he never realized in the classroom! Your child can also use the tools available as extra help or as re-teaching methods for challenging academic areas.

Time Management

Being efficient and aware of our use of time and effort.

Khan Academy provides short, but thorough lectures on an enormous selection of topics. These videos can serve as a quick way for your child to refresh his memory before beginning a homework assignment or project, which eliminates the need to revisit textbooks each night. Also, the more extra practice your child does outside of school, the more prepared he will be to accomplish tasks in school, quickly and easily.

Mathematics

This program allows users to search for specific keywords such as "geometry," "binomials," or other mathematical terminology. Your child can then use the videos as a model for the step-by-step process just in case he forgot, or couldn't follow along when the steps were explained in class. This can also be a great tool if your child is ever absent, as mathematics is typically a fast-moving and cumulative subject. Your child can also use the Practice page for personalized mathematics activities that improve skills one category at a time, or use the practice problems presented within the videos themselves.

Science

Khan Academy is a great tool for extra help with science. The videos in this category range from very basic to complex and college level. Once again, your child can use the videos to reinforce what he has already learned, to preview what he will learn next, or to supplement material that he is struggling to understand in school. Hearing the same information multiple times in different ways will help your child get the most out of the subject matter. The practice problems are especially helpful.

Social Studies

Khan Academy does a great job of summarizing large quantities of information. While your child may take away every detail from these videos, what he learned can certainly supplement the notes taken in class. Videos offer a visual representation that students often find helpful in seeing the "big picture." A war or a time period is often best understood when put into a visual context.
